Sandy Kelly is undoubtedly one of the finest entertainers Ireland has ever produced.  Her career stretches right back to her childhood and her family’s “Fit-Up” Roadshow.  Sandy Kelly first appeared on stage at the early age of 3. Sandy Kelly represented Ireland in the Eurovision in 1982 she was a European ‘Gold Star Award’ winner in 1985 in 1986 and 1989 she represented Ireland at ‘Fan Fare’ in Nashville.  She had her own RTE TV series from 1990 – 1992 – the show never left the top ten Tam Ratings and was later aired on both Border and Sky TV in the UK.   She has appeared on British and American TV on numerous occasions.

Sandy Kelly has recorded with Johnny Cash Willie Nelson George Hamilton IV Glen Campbell Patsy Cline Jett Williams (Hank William’s daughter) Randy Van Warmer The Jordanaires Chet Atkins and more recently Hal Ketchum to name but a few worldwide stars.  She has had two gold records with Johnny Cash: “Woodcarver’ and ‘Ring of Fire’ and a Gold Album and Single for her ‘Patsy Cline’ tribune recordings.  Sandy has toured with Johnny Cash Willie Nelson and Slim Whitman.  The list goes on and on and it shows the true talent that Sandy possesses that so many of the world’s top artists are now associated with her.

The Monks of Glenstal Abbey

“Gregorian Chant”

This album went platinum in Ireland and spent 10 weeks in the Irish Charts. The media raved about its content,packaging and presentation Gregorian Chant is an integral part of the Benadictine monastic experience, forming the core of the Church?s daily offices as they are chanted in choir: From morning (Matins and Lauds) through Mid-day Mass to evening (Vespers and Compline).

With passionate intensity and yet sober restraint, it channels religious emotion and gives it musical expression.Organ improvisation, as it is heard in this recording, is often used in the liturgy at Glenstal, capturing the mood of the liturgical action through spontaneous embellishment of the Gregorian melodies.This CD comes with a 16 page colour booklet,with all the words of the chants as they are sung in Latin, plus special Irish and English translations by the monks.

Situated near the village of Murro in the North-East corner of Limerick, Glenstal is Ireland's only Benedictine monastery for monks it is also one of Ireland's leading boarding schools.

The abbey is also famous for its activities in art, music and religious studies and over the last thirty years has been at the forefront of the theological debate and ecumenism in Ireland.

The front cover image on this CD shows a section of the stained glass window in the Lady Chapel (Glenstal Abbey). The Artist Patrick Pye, inauguratedat Pentecost 1964, They depict the church of the Old and New Testaments in six panels. Inside booklet is a picture of Diptych of the Dormition of Our Lady and the Harrowing of Hell 17th Century, of the Stroganoff School from the Glenstal Abbey Collection.

What started as rough mixes, after a lengthy period of reflection and writing, very quickly became the foundation of the album. Within a few days - less than a week in fact - piano, guitar and vocals, all relatively raw and unfiltered, made the cut. Joe asked friends and long time collaborators to lend their talent to the project. Cellist Vyvienne Long and violin by Steve Wickham add a subtle flavour foregoing superfluous embellishment. 

Joe explains some of the themes of the songs;

"The album begins with Spy Wednesday, continues through Holy Thursday (Like A Rose Tattoo), through to The Easter Vigil itself and finishes on Easter Sunday (Not A Christian Anymore). It's about the rewinding of a man's faith. The loss of belief, almost a perverse enlightenment told through the story of the passion.

Juliette Walking In The Rain is about the night myself and my wife saw the legendary French actress Juliette Binoche walking across a deserted square in Dublin. Just a very poetic moment - magic realism.

The Valley of Tears is an area of clifftop on Inis Mor in the Aran Islands. When the islanders were forced to emigrate they would travel by currach to the mainland where they would then board the ship for America. This ship would then shelter in the Gregory Sound awaiting favourable weather for the voyage. The ship would lie close enough to this particular clifftop that you could almost reach out and touch your loved ones who were leaving the island, never to return. It was these scenes of heartbreak that gave it the name, Gleann ne nDeor, The Valley of Tears.”
